VAUCHEZ Antoine

Antoine Vauchez est directeur de recherche au CNRS en sociologie politique et en droit. Ses recherches portent sur la formation d’un centre de pouvoir européen, l’émergence de corps de connaissance juridique et économique du projet européen et la consolidation d’un « pouvoir d’indépendance » autour des cours de justice, banques centrales et des agences de régulation européennes. Il a également travaillé récemment sur la mue européenne et libérale des Etats et le brouillage des frontières du public et du privé. En 2021, il a reçu le "Michael Endres Prize" pour ses recherches et dirige actuellement le Groupement d’intérêt scientifique-GIS Euro-Labqui réunit les chercheuses et chercheurs de SHS de 27 universités et grandes écoles particulièrement investies dans l’analyse des objets européens. Il est en outre membre du conseil d’administration de l’Association française de science politique, professeur invité permanent au centre de recherche iCourts (Univ. de Copenhague), directeur adjoint du Master « Affaires publiques européennes » à l’Université Paris1- Panthéon Sorbonne, et Max Planck Fellow assurant la coordination scientifique du groupe "Democracy and Independence in Europe" porté conjointement par les Instituts Max Planck de Heidelberg et de Francfort.

Antoine Vauchez is a CNRS Research Professor (Directeur de recherche) in political sociology and law at the Centre européen de sociologie et de science politique (Ehess - Université Paris 1-Sorbonne). His research engages with the field of historical and political sociology, law and politics, and socio-legal studies. He focuses in particular on the formation of EU center of power, the emergence of bodies of legal and economic knowledge of the European project, and the consolidation of a "power of independence" around courts of justice, central banks and regulatory agencies. He has also worked recently on the European and liberal mutation of states and the blurring of the boundaries between public and private. In 2021, he received the "Michael Endres Prize" for his work in the field of the European studies and currently directs the Groupement d’intérêt scientifique-GIS Euro-Lab, which brings together researchers in social sciences and humanities from 27 French universities and grandes écoles particularly involved in this field. He is also a member of the board of the French Political Science Association, a permanent visiting professor at the iCourts research center (Univ. of Copenhagen), deputy director of the Master’s degree in "European Union - Public Affairs" at the University of Paris1- Panthéon Sorbonne, and a Max Planck Fellow in charge of the scientific coordination of the "Democracy and Independence in Europe" group jointly led by the Max Planck Institutes in Heidelberg and Frankfurt.

Les travaux d’Antoine Vauchez se situent au croisement de la socio-histoire des espaces de pouvoir transnationaux et de la sociologie des savoirs et formes d’expertise (droit et économie). A la suite de son Habilitation à diriger des recherches (2010), ses principaux thèmes de recherche portent sur la formation d’un centre de pouvoir européen, l’émergence d’une corps de connaissance juridique et économique du projet européen et la consolidation d’un « pouvoir d’indépendance » autour des cours de justice, banques centrales et des agences de régulation européennes.

Parmi ses publications récentes sur ce thème, on trouve une monographie, L’Union par le droit. L’invention d’un programme institutionnel pour l’Europe (Presses de Sciences Po, 2013, traduit en anglais chez Cambridge UP en 2015), deux collectifs Politique de l’indépendance , Septentrion, 2019, et Lawyering Europe. European Law as a Transnational Social Field (Hart, 2015), un essai Démocratiser l’Europe (coll. La république des idées, Seuil, 2014, traduit en anglais etallemand), et un livre d’intervention Pour un traité de démocratisation de l’Europe (Seuil, 2017, Harvard University Press, 2019) écrit avec Stéphanie Hennette, Thomas Piketty, et Guillaume Sacriste et traduit en neuf langues.

Dans le sillage de ses recherches plus anciennes sur les rapports entre droit et politique, il poursuit également un agenda de recherche sur les nouvelles relations collusives qui s’établissent entre les élites politico-administratives et le barreau d’affaires à la faveur du re-façonnage néo-libéral des Etats européens. Dans ce cadre, il a récemment publié un ouvrage de recherche Sphère publique, intérêts privés. Enquête sur un grande brouillage (Presses de Sciences Po, 2017), un essai Public (coll. Le mot est faible, Anamosa, 2022), et co-dirigé un podcast "Public pride".

After graduating in political science at Sciences Po Paris (1993) and in public law at the Université Paris 1-Sorbonne (1995), Antoine Vauchez has received a Ph.D at the European University Institute (Florence, 2000) and his Habilitation at the Université Paris 1-Sorbonne (2010). Ever since, he has been a full-time researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and a Research Professor (since 2010). Over the years, he has been a visiting professor in a variety of universities : a Post-doctoral fellow at the American Bar Foundation (Northwestern University, 2000), a Marie Curie Fellow at the Robert Schuman Center (EUI, 2007-2009), an Alliance Visiting professor at Columbia University, a Senior Emile Noël fellow at New York University (2014), a Fernand Braudel Fellow at the European University Institute as well as a Visiting professor in a variety of other universities (Amsterdam University, Bocconi University, Copenhagen University, the Luiss in Rome, Cairo University). Most recently, he has been a Michael Endres Visiting professor at the Hertie school of governance in Berlin (2021-2022).

Recently, he has brought to an end a series of four books on law, politics and democracy in the European Union, a monograph providing a renewed narrative of Europe’s legal integration (Brokering Europe. Euro-lawyers and the Making of a Transnational Polity, Cambridge University Press, 2015 ; also available in French), an edited volume on the transnational field of European law (with Bruno de Witte, Lawyering Europe. European Law as a Transnational Legal Field , Oxford, Hart, 2013), an essay Democratizing Europe (Seuil, 2014 ; Palgrave, 2015, Hamburger Verlag, 2016) and an intervention book with Thomas Piketty, Stéphanie Hennette and Guillaume Sacriste : How to democratize Europe (Harvard University Press, 2020) which has been translated in nine languages .

He has also developed a research agenda on the neoliberal transformations of Western States as seen from the blurring of the public-private law divide. On this topic, he has published a research book Corporate Lawyers, statecraft and the Making of Public-Private France (Cornell University Press, 2021, initially published at the Presses de Sciences Po), an essay Public (book series : le mot est faible, ed. Anamosa, 2022), and co-animated a podcast entitled "Public pride".

His publications cover a variety of disciplinary fields including sociology (American Journal of Sociology, International Political Sociology, Economy and Society, Berliner Journal für Soziologie, Sociological Review), political science (European Political Science Research, Journal of European Integration, Politix, Revue française de science politique, etc…) and law (European Law Journal, European Law Open, Law and Social Inquiry, International Journal of Constitutional Law, etc.).
